Web accessibility

An accessible website is a better web experience for everyone, not just for people living with disabilities.

Why you need to prioritise accessibility

Improving web accessibility can help people to easily access your website’s information and services.

Not only will it help people living with disabilities, but you’ll also improve the web experience for everyone using your website.

You can make it easier for people to understand your content, navigate your website and complete services.

Accessible web content helps to:

  • improve search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine rankings
  • increase sales by targeting markets that might be ignored by your competitors
  • build business trust
  • increase completion of online services and sales.

NZ web accessibility standard

We’ll help you improve accessibility so you can meet government requirements.

All public and non-public service departments must meet the New Zealand Government Web Accessibility Standard 1.1.

You can learn more about the NZ web standards on digital.govt.nz.

Fix issues – accessibility report

If you have an existing website that you’d like to improve, we can analyse your web content and give you a detailed plain English report. This will highlight any issues and also give you examples on how to fix them.

Possible content issues we might focus on include:

  • heading hierarchy
  • keyboard accessibility
  • link text
  • colour contrast
  • video accessibility
  • alt text of images.

You can use this report to improve your web content yourself or talk to us about how we could help make these fixes.

While we might touch on the code of your website while looking at content issues, this report doesn’t analyse your HTML or JavaScript for other web accessibility issues.
